Did you know: How much sleep does your dog need per day?

Are you jealous of how long your dog can sleep? Have you ever wondered if something is dreaming when you move in your sleep? How much sleep is enough for your dog? This is a question that often bothers owners.

Unlike people who are awake for most of the day and sleep at night and get an average of eight hours of sleep, dogs do not sleep like that.

Dogs often fall asleep several times during the day. The time they spend sleeping depends on various factors: the dog’s age, health condition, and physical ability. That’s why we rightly ask, how much sleep do they need? There is a lot that goes into the final sum of sleeping hours.

How much sleep does your dog need

– Average sleep time

Dogs adapt easily when it comes to sleep. Unlike humans, neither a change of environment nor a “change of bed” bothers them. If something happens around the dog while he is sleeping, he will easily wake up and “postpone” his sleep for a while.

– Different breeds and sleep needs

Depending on the breed, the sleeping needs may be different. Breeds like Saint Bernards, Mastiffs, and Pyrenean Mountain Dogs generally need more sleep than the average of 14 hours. They sleep about 18 hours a day, while most dogs need about 14 hours of sleep. Curious and playful puppies, who are on an inventive expedition every day, need about 18 to 20 hours of sleep a day to prepare for the next busy day.

– Stages of sleep

Dogs go through different stages of sleep. After the first stage of falling asleep, dogs enter the slow phase of sleep, when brain waves and heart rate are slowed down. Then the dog becomes completely relaxed. About ten minutes later, the REM phase (rapid eye movement) occurs. If you notice that your pet is twitching or moving its legs as if running, it means that it is dreaming and is in the REM phase.

Dogs sleep more than humans, but their sleep is not as deep. The length of a dog’s sleep depends on its activity, state of health, and the like. Dogs adjust their sleep patterns so that they can always be focused on their surroundings, so that they are alert when something is happening. The rest of the time, they sleep.
